Possible relationship between the Earth's rotation variations and geomagnetic field reversals over the past 510 Myr

چکیده
The Earth’s rotation can change as a result of several internal and external processes, each of which is at a different timescale. Here, we present some possible connections between the Earth’s rotation variations and the geomagnetic reversal frequency rates over the past 120 Myr. In addition, we show the possible relationship between the geomagnetic field reversal frequency and the 18 δ O oscillations. Because the latter reflects the glacial and interglacial periods, we hypothesize that it can be used as a possible indicator to explain the length of day (LOD) variations and consequently the reversal field frequency over the past 510 Myr. Therefore, our analysis suggests that the relationships between the geomagnetic reversal frequency rates and the Earth’s rotation changes during the Phanerozoic. However, more reversal data are required for periods before the Kiaman Reverse Superchon (KRS) to strengthen the perspective of using the geomagnetic reversal data as a marker for the LOD variations through geological times.

Earth's history has been witness to recurrently alternating phases of catastrophic evolution and dominant tectonic deformations, contractions and extension of rifting and spreading leading to quasi-cyclic changes in sedimentary environment and various earth processes. Recent studies have shown quasi-periodicities of 32 2 Million years (Myr) in various endogenic (geomagnetic reversals, magmatic ...
متن کاملBats Respond to Very Weak Magnetic Fields
How animals, including mammals, can respond to and utilize the direction and intensity of the Earth's magnetic field for orientation and navigation is contentious. In this study, we experimentally tested whether the Chinese Noctule, Nyctalus plancyi (Vespertilionidae) can sense magnetic field strengths that were even lower than those of the present-day geomagnetic field. Such field strengths oc...

Regionally Recurrent Paleomagnetic Transitional Fields and Mantle Processes
Whether Earth's lower mantle observably influences the geodynamo as it attempts to reverse polarity has been hotly debated for more than a decade. Although several paleomagnetic records of transitional events support this contention, analyses of worldwide Cenozoic reversal data, when considered en masse, appear inconclusive. With this controversy in mind we present transitional field data assoc...
متن کاملEvidence of nearby supernovae affecting life on Earth
Observations of open star clusters in the solar neighborhood are used to calculate local supernova (SN) rates for the past 510 million years (Myr). Peaks in the SN rates match passages of the Sun through periods of locally increased cluster formation which could be caused by spiral arms of the Galaxy. A statistical analysis indicates that the Solar System has experienced many large short-term i...
